Main points of Vernallis view on music videos
Carole Vernallis observed editing and camerawork in music videos. She came to the conlusion that edits in music videos come more frequently than in film. She also found that the editing has a rhythmic basis which is connected to the song.
The main points of her observation are below :
- The rules of continuity editing are broken and draw attention to whats being shown
- Attention is drawn to really obvious edits – such as wipes and special effects
- Jump cuts are used often
- Base tracks ( A master shot) is mainly used to create some sort of structure to the video
- The camera can sometimes move in time with the music
