The video for ‘Im on one’ Featuring rap artists Drake, Rick Ross and Lil Wayne is , in my opinion , the best example of the music video form – especially a video in the rap genre.
The video is basically about the rappers showing off their lifestyle – the penthouses, the girls, the cars and their crews. Drake ( seen in the image above ) is seen rapping in a penthouse with his entourage , Rick Ross is seen driving a very expensive car with a woman looking seductive and finally lil wayne is seen talking to a girl. These three settings show the wealth and lifestyle that the three have, this is very typical for most music videos – even though it is heavily seen in hip hop & rap videos, it can be seen in videos from the dance , pop , and in rare cases rock videos.
Another reason why I think it’s a good example of the music video form is due to the editing. The video relates to Carol Vernallis observations. She comments that edits come more frequently than in films for example. This is the case in this video where scenes never last for more than eight seconds , there is always a cut to another shot. Jump cuts are used and can be seen at 47 - 49 seconds when Drake jumps from one place to another, but it tries to seem like one full shot . The base track ( also known as the master shot) is used in this video , which allows it to have a structure. The base track is Drakes scene in the penthouse. Carol Vernallis also comments that the camera may move in time with the music – this is another observation of hers which is seen many times in this video but especially during 3:27 till 3:29.
The video also concerns Laura Mulveys view – ‘In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly’ . There are two females in this video that fit into the passive female category , the screen shots are below :
Overall I think this video is a good illustration of a music video as it clearly fits into every stereotype / convention of its genre making it a perfect music video.
