The previous student video I have chosen is from 2009 / 2010. The song is by pop artist Robyn and is called ‘Bum like you’. Here is the student video :
As Andrew Godwin comments ‘ pop videos rely on repetition’. This can be seen in this video as we see the singer in the same location many times in the video. Below are screen caps showing an example of on repeated image in the students video:
In reference to Laura Mulveys quote - In a world ordered by sexual imbalance, pleasure in looking has been split between active/male and passive/female. The determining male gaze projects its fantasy onto the female figure which is styled accordingly’ . In this video i don’t believe this is the case. The singer is not dressed provocatively but in cover up fashionable clothing. However in reference to mulvey stating women are ‘dismembered’ could be true. There are a few shots in which we just see parts of the singer – they are shown below.
Overall i think the videos main strengths are that it does work as a pop video. It is fully convincing as it has the usual pop video conventions. As for weaknesses the video does not have any obvious ones , but i think maybe the use of the shots which Laura Mulvey would consider dismemberment could be avoided.
