Andrew Goodwin- And What He Thinks
He feels that pop videos do not impose a traditional narrative approach like the ones of a novel or film.
The reason for this is because pop videos are built around songs and songs do not normally have a traditional narrative structure. Which is normality-problem-resolution
Pop videos also normally have the singer as both the narrator and as a character
usually the singer looks directly in the camera and this is an extension of performance and trying to connect the viewer at home with the performance.
Repetition is a key thing in pop videos. The video often repeats images in the way the song repeats the chorus or verses. The use of repetition means that as viewers we become familiar with the genre and have certain expectations. The video would be played on TV then on radio then advertised, again making the song repetitive.
There are three types of relations between songs and videos: illustration, amplification and disjuncture.
Illustration- the video tells a story of the lyrics “pap dont preach” (Madonna) for example. In this case dance is used to express her feelings in the song
Amplification- the video introduces new meanings that do not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning
Disjuncture- there is little connection between the lyric and video. He uses Michael Jackson's video. 'man in the mirror' as an example. The song is about self realisation but the video is full of radical world events.
Pop videos often have their own recognisable features, normally related with the artist themselves.
Videos that are from songs written for particular movies often incooperate images from that movie in the video- for example Celine Dion 'MyHeart Will Go On from Titanic.
