Evaluation - Question 4 - What have you learned from your audience feedback?

The first audience feedback that i recieved was at the cinema showing of the music video. Below is a video of the feedback during the showing and what i learnt from it and what i would change if i was to do the project again:

Outside of the cinema (after the showing) we recieved some feedback from the other A2 media students:

When asked what we could improve on the comments were :
- Add more locations
- Add more of the special effects
- Maybe add another person

If i was to change the product in anyway i would take these comments into consideration. Locations such as iconic London landmarks like the London Eye for example. This would maybe help establish the setting more and add to the glamour of the video. The special effects could be added in more places and maybe we could have changed up the colour a little to emphasize on the artist. And finally in relation to adding another person - our first idea did involve other people but due to a change in the final idea we changed it - but looking back we could have maybe added a dancer or some friends to add to the friendly / fun vibe of the video.

Audience feedback on Vimeo

Above is a screen shot of comments that were left under our video on vimeo. The first comment says '...you guys properly represented females...' This is what we aimed to achieve as a group and i am personally happy that this was seen by the audience. The second and third comment states that they 'love the close ups' and 'love the special effects' - again this is something that we were very considerate of using in the video as it commonality in music videos.  They also comment that 'more locations should have been used' this is something that i would have considered.

Viewing Figures
Where in the world the video has been viewed.

The picture above shows where in the world the video has been viewed. The video has the most views in England , then the USA and then unknown. This little bit of information lets us know where the video relates to the public the most - the UK. This is the type of audience that we were aiming to attract so this audience feedback has shown that the video is doing exactly what the group and i wanted it to.

These are also the viewing figures from Vimeo. They show a spike in January but the overal total loads compared to total finishedare not very high. However It does not include the views on the blog and other from it being embedded on other sites - such as FaceBook. So this feedback shows that maybe our target audience do not watch most videos on Vimeo and that we should upload to a more popular website such as Youtube.

Overall what i have learned from the audience feedback is that generally the video was liked , from the fun personality of the artist to the special effects used. It seemed to relate with the audience and they enjoyed it. The feedback on what could be changed was all the same - add more locations and more special effects - if the video was to be done again i would highly consider these comments to make the video more appealing to the target audience.

Evaluation - Question 2 - How effective is the combination of your main product (video) and ancillary texts (digipak and advertisement)?

For this project to be successful I had to keep in mind the fact that the ancillary texts and main products had to be successful when  looked at on their own and even more when the two were combined. The main aim was to make sure that if the audience saw either the digipak , advert or video – that they would be able to recognise them in a different place. For example if the audience saw the advertisement on a billboard in the city they would see the music video on their TV and instantly realise that they belong to the same artist – creating a clear brand identity. This was done through many ways – such as consistency in the colours and certain themes.

The conventions of the genre were a way in which I made sure the products were effective. Such as having a glamourous overtone - which is seen through the black and white colour scheme and outfits the artist is wearing. The gold earrings that are seen in the advertisement and digipak connote a sense of wealth and relate to the theme.

Locations in the products also kept the products consistent and effective. The video had several different locations in it including an outdoor location and shots taken within Chrystella's bedroom. In the video is a clear motif of artistic / colourful backgrounds, which can be seen in the GIF below. These shots contrast with the digipak but in the bedroom scene there is a clear shot with a blank / white background which relates to the digipak.

Camera angles were another way in which the two products have a visual relation to each other. On the front cover of the digipak is a close up shot of the artist. This is reflected in the video during the base track with the painting in the background.

The fonts in both the advertisement and digipak are the same as there is no font in the video it cannot relate.

The costumes in both products are also easily relatable. Even though the outfits are not exactly the same , both have a glamourous undertone but could be still seen as casual. The video features several different outfits - however there is a strong theme of black running through the outfits. In relation to the digipak  - the outfit the artist is wearing is also black.

Another main aim of the conventions of the products ( apart from promoting the brand identity ) was to attract the target audience. As explained in a previous blog the target audience for the artist is young ( 16 - 25 year old could be a student or working full time)  black british , female , and very fashion conscience.

Overall I do think that the products would perfectly attract the target audience as Chrystella is a representation of what they aspire to be / already are. Her dress sense is very easily copied and is appealing to young females. The locations that are featured in the video would attract the audience as they are places that they could easily go to / have already been - making her more relatable to the audience. Her overall look and personality within the video are very friendly and have a fun vibe  - this again makes her more attractive to the audience.

Last minute inspiration

I was struggling to think of the perfect way to add all three images to the back of the digipak until I saw this image of a Destiny's Child album cover. I want to re create the same use of cut up images in my digipak , and i already have started the process.

First day of creating the digipak

Taking the photos from the harddrive and saving them onto my student account
Starting point
Whilst i was working on the digipak i noticed the background of the photos were a bit too dark for what I wanted. So I lightened them. The process can be seen below.
Before and after.

This video shows how i managed to completely remove the background of the image - making it easier to use and blend in with the other photos on the main digipak.

How I used the clone tool to proper blend in the image into the middle of the two other images.

Analysis of magazine adverts

Positives elements of the advertisement
- Clear image of artist
- What is being promoted is clear 'the new album'
- Logo for company is clearly seen
- Single titles in bold red - encourages people to buy if they like the songs
 - Clear theme throughout - hard imagery
- Only three colours ( greyish white/red/black/)

Negative elements of the advertisement
- No clear release date

Positives elements of the advertisement
- Clear image of artist
-Release date can be seen
- Logo for music company is clearly seen
- Album cover is seen in ad
 - Clear theme throughout
- Colour scheme is simple and similar to album cover

Negative elements of the advertisement
- Not exactly clear that it is for an album - could be for a DVD

For my advertisement i will take inspiration from the positive elements and make sure that i do no include any of the negative elements from either of these advertisements.

Analysis of covers of digipaks from the same genre

This CD cover is a close up of RnB star Rihanna. There is an album title 'LOUD' but no text that shows her name. It may be because she is such a big star and is very recogniseable - in relation to my cover I would have to put Chrystella's name as she is a new artist with a debut album. There is a strong theme of red - in the make up she is wearing and her hair. I think LOUD and the theme of red correlate as they both relate to each other as red is a bright , and 'LOUD' colour.. I intend to also do this with my digipak - maybe have the colour of her lips running throughout the theme.
This is the cover of Alica Keys' album 'As I am'. Just like Rihanna's it is a close up of her entire face. She is looking directly into the camera / straight at the audience. This relates to the album title as it signifys strength and power. In my digipak for Chrystella i want to put across the connotations of a strong woman who isnt afraid of anything , just like what this album does. The colours are also very simple. There's a nice black and white photo and a red & black font with the album title in a white font - all in capitals , which again relate to the album title.
The third and final album cover is from Kelly Rowlands newest album 'Here I am'. Just like the previous two it is a close up of the artists face - a reacccuring theme in this genre ( which i will obviously continue with my cover ). There is a blue tint in this cover , which shows that it is common for the covers to have some sort of colour theme - usually one. The name of the artist is in big bold white letters and is bigger than the font for the actual album title - which is small and blue, which almost makes it blend into to the theme.

Overall i have discovered that my final image needs to be a close up of Chrystellas face and that i need to think of one colour theme to be on the front. Also the name of the album should be smaller than her actual name.

Font research

Ive been on www.dafont.com and done some quick research on fonts which i would like to use on the digipak. Below are my favourites from the site:

Cinema & feedback

Today we went to the local Islington cinema to watch all of the A2 groups music videos. When our music video came on the screen I decided to film it using my BlackBerry's video camera. In the video you can hear cheers from the audience during certain parts , for example when we used the sparkle effect.
